Conditions We Treat
Ageing Well
Ageing is an inevitable part of life and we should acknowledge and celebrate the wisdom and insights that come with living to an advanced age. People are living longer, thanks in part to public health measures, better sanitation and living conditions, improved nutrition and advanced medical treatment. Today, over 1 in 7 people in Australia are aged 65 years and over, (www.aihw.gov.au).
Ageing affects the musculoskeletal system through a number of changes that impact both structure and function. These changes include a loss of bone density and associated increased risk of osteoporosis, loss of muscle mass leading to reduced strength and tone, osteoarthritis development, joint stiffness and reduced flexibility. Lifestyle habits that support healthy ageing of the musculoskeletal system include regular physical activity, strengthening and resistance exercise, healthy weight maintenance and dietary habits that support an adequate intake of protein, calcium and vitamin D.
Supporting your health through chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, exercise prescription and/or nutritional modification, encourages the maintenance of a physically capable musculoskeletal system throughout ageing. Ben Lawrance and Jacqui Gaibor have clinical interests in this area.
